What We Believe
We Believe...
St. John’s is an Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Texas and a member of the Anglican Communion.
We are a gospel-centered church, proclaiming the Good News of God’s grace to everyone.
We believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection provides the means of salvation for all people.
We accept the Bible, Old and New Testaments, as the word of God, “containing all things necessary for salvation.”
Our beliefs are summed up in the historic statements of faith as found in the Apostles and Nicene creeds.
Worship
Our worship is rooted in the Anglican tradition as expressed in the Book of Common Prayer.
Our worship is:
Liturgical
Our worship follows an ordered pattern that is both ancient and communal. We use prayers, readings, and rituals that Christians have shared across centuries and around the world. This rhythm—of hearing Scripture, offering prayers, sharing in Holy Communion, and singing together—helps us enter more deeply into the story of God’s love. Far from being rigid, liturgy gives us a framework that allows everyone to participate fully, whether you’ve been in church your whole life or are walking in the door for the first time. It’s a way of worshiping that connects us with the wider Christian tradition while also grounding us in God’s presence here and now.
Sacramental
“The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace. Grace is God’s favor toward us, unearned and undeserved; by grace God forgives our sins, enlightens our minds, stirs our hearts, and strengthens our wills.” – Book of Common Prayer, page 857-858.
We believe that God meets us in a very real way in the sacraments. In Baptism, we are welcomed into the household of God as children of God, marked as God’s own forever with the simple yet powerful sign of water. In the Eucharist (which means thanksgiving) we gather around the table as Christ taught us. In the bread and wine, we are “assured in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of Jesus and heirs of God’s eternal kingdom.” All baptized Christians are welcomed to receive the bread and wine, and be in communion with God and one another.
Participatory
In our worship, we hear the word of God, we sing together and pray together.
